Introduction

Bibliographical research is more difficult for some topics within biblical studies than for others.  Finding helpful scholarly studies on the theme of mission in the Bible falls on the more difficult side, since it is a wide-ranging topic and it can reasonably belong both to the field of biblical studies and to the field of missiology.  The main purpose for this bibliography is to gather together a comprehensive list of recent scholarly works published on the theme of mission in the Bible.  By “recent,” I mean studies from 1990 to the present.  By “comprehensive,” I mean that I have tried to provide as complete a list as possible, although I have undoubtedly overlooked some works especially in light of the increasingly global presence of Christian scholarship.  As a background to current studies, I have included at the beginning a much more selective list of older works on mission in the Bible, significant studies that have a continuing relevance for research on the subject.  This brief list of earlier standard works is followed by an extensive list of recent studies.  I have marked with an asterisk the most important of these recent studies.  My criteria for identifying important works include the extent and the depth of the exegetical study.  I want to highlight works that help to clarify and explain the Bible’s overall teaching on what God has sent his people to do in this world, as well as works that study in a thorough way the historical background for the Bible’s teaching on mission.  This bibliography is an update and expansion of a handout that was given at the Institute of Biblical Research annual meeting in 1998.
